While attending a “meet and greet” event recently hosted at Northbound Leather in Toronto, I was delighted to see that they have significantly expanded their latex and rubber selection, making them – without question – the most extensive supplier of pret-a-porter latex in the city.

Considering that my dear friend George Giaouris – the proprietor of Toronto’s leading leather and fetish supply establishment – is a pretty heavy latex fetishist himself, this is an appropriate expansion into something that I so love.

I was beyond pleased to see the amount of wall, rack and cabinet space occupied by a very well-rounded selection of dresses, skirts, blouses, shirts, tights, pants, catsuits, hoods, stockings and gloves.

Northbound Leather have always been the vanguard of the fetish scene here in my hometown.
It comes as no surprise that they are now the place for anyone wishing to actually go to a location (and not a website) to shop for latex fashions and accessories.

Their full range consists of items by Luna Designs (aka Latexworks), Vex, Blackstyle, Polymorphe, Saxenfelt and Latexa.

In recent years TG has a built a decently-deviant and rock ‘n’ roll reputation for being the best fetish way to mess with Cupid’s aim. Indeed it has proved so popular that its regular sell-out Valentine’s Ball has had to shift venues to London’s largest licensed night club: SeOne at St Thomas Street, London Bridge, SE1.

The Torture Garden Love Hurts Valentines Ball takes place on Saturday 13th February from 9pm to 6am, with a massive 6 themed rooms: Neon Love Ballroom, Striptease Boudoir, Arabian Nights Harem Dungeon, Couples Playrooms, Sex Doll Tunnel of Love and in case you feel like getting hitched for fun – a Wedding Chapel. There’ll be the usually dynamic Djs with a mix of Mash-up Valentines Exotica, Twisted Love Songs, Neo Swing and Electro Clash. And of course TG retains its global reputation for dazzlingly-mad techno – and not being a fan myself I still have to say you’re not going to find a better arena for the finest in this genre.

On the live side Bizarre cover star Viktoria Modesta will be playing a live music set along with an indispensable performance from Empress Stah buttressed by a resplendant presentation of Burlesque, pole and lap dancing entertainment. Add to this a couture fashion show from Kaori’s Latex Dreams and TG attention to detail in decor, progressive visuals and excellent organisation and you have what looks like being the event of the year. Advanced tickets start from £31 for members, £36 non-members. The dress code is strict, with a full list of ideas on the TG website.

And a s a footnote I tell you this. I took some friends of mine a few moons back who know drugs don’t work for me, even though they were experienced ravers of the first order. As we entered the club they commented that the atmosphere felt so uninhibited and welcoming they told me that it was as if they had taken two Es. This why I go, because I like having my mind blown for real. Hopefully see you there, its my favourite clubnight. Well it’s finally happened, rubber clothes are hitting the mainstream: high street fashion retailers Topshop has released a selection of garments under its funky flagship banner ‘Unique’. With  its own regular show at London Fashion Week and supermodel Kate Moss lending her name to one of its clothing ranges, Topshop has campaigned successfully to turn around its 90s low-end reputation. Now this daring move aims to capitalise further on urban street-styling.

On offer at the Topshop website is a pink rubber pencil skirt priced at £130; cycling shorts at £110 and a black Bandeau – or ‘boob tube’ as they’re affectionately called in the UK – retailing at £80.

Now doubt influenced by the recent popularity of latex leggings and various pop divas such as Beyoncée, Britney Spears, LadyGaGa and the Pussycat Dolls, the range is aimed at the female youth demographic. In addition, Topshop are giving away free postage and packaging for orders over £100 within the UK.

The move has created much debate within the fetish scene online – especially on Fetlife and Facebook – with a divide between some fetishists who see it as a sign of society becoming more permissive and others complaining of the items being too basic and expensive, and that to really wear latex you have to love it. This has been countered by those who believe ‘latex for the masses’ has to start somewhere. Topshop say that the range is aimed at the fashion-conscious under-35s who covet the Unique brand, and that it’s ‘tongue-in-cheek… and style with a twist’.

Of course we fetishists know other rubber designers such as Libidex who sell such items at less than half the price, but what is interesting is the adoption of mass distribution. Ironically, the edgy, sexy quality of rubber clothes has the ability to backfire when worn sloppily. Will it all end in tears? Please share your comments with us above.

Dawnamatrix, who’s probably familiar to LustLoveLatex readers for her stunning latex kimonos, was awarded the title last weekend at the New York Rubber Ball Weekend. Previous year’s winner Jean Bardot was on hand to award her the crown, as well as a panel of fetish celebrity judges. Dawn showed enormous creativity and wit in her competition outfits, which I’m pretty sure were singularly her creation. She’ll have lots of opportunities to wear other designers’ ware in the coming year, though, judging from the thousands of dollars in prizes she’ll collect from fetish shops and designers worldwide!

Lovely Jade Vixen and L.A.’s Goddess Soma were the talented runners-up, and judging from photos already posted of the event, the competition was rather fierce and photogenic. One of these days I’m determined to see the content myself!
